Upgrade Windows Server Edition using DISM (WS2008 R2 to WS2012 R2)

Applies To:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2012 / 2012 R2


  1. Run Command Prompt in Administrator Mode

  2. Get Current Edition:

dism /Online /Get-CurrentEdition


  1. Get Target Edition supported:

dism /Online /Get-TargetEditions


  1. Windows Server Edition can be upgraded to higher edition (e.g. Standard to Enterprise)
    Once upgraded, it can not be downgraded into lower edition (e.g. DataCenter to Enterprise)

Upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 Edition:

dism /Online /Set-Edition:<EDITION> /ProductKey:<PRODUCT_KEY>

ServerStandard    -> ServerEnterprise/ServerDataCenter
ServerEnterprise -> ServerDataCenter

Note: Evaluation Edition is not upgradable to Full version


Upgrade Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 Edition:

dism /Online /Set-Edition:<EDITION> /ProductKey:<PRODUCT_KEY> /AcceptEula

ServerStandardEval      -> ServerStandard/ServerDataCenter
ServerDataCenterEval  -> ServerDataCenter

 ServerStandard               -> ServerDataCenter

   Windows Server 2012


   Windows Server 2012 R2
